Polis grew up in a prairie outpost called Dapp, Alberta, population 75. He would bring his pet Labrador Retriever onto the ice and play keep away with the puck as there were few kids in town. Polis advanced through the junior levels and was selected as the Pittsburgh Penguins first choice in the
1970 NHL Amateur Draft .He played in the All-Star Game during his first three years with the Penguins. Following a number of injuries, Polis served his last pro season with the Washington Capitals in 1979–80.Awards & Achievements
