John Edward Fogarty (
March 23 1913 -January 10 1967 ) was a Congressman from Rhode Island for 26 years.He was born in
Providence, Rhode Island . His brother,Charles Fogarty, Sr. , was a State Senator and Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Administration. His nephew,Charles J. Fogarty , was theLieutenant Governor ofRhode Island , and a candidate for Governor in 2006.He attended
La Salle Academy andProvidence College , apprenticed as a bricklayer in 1930 and rose to become president of Bricklayers Union No. 1 of Rhode Island.He was elected as a Democrat in 1940, and served until his resignation on
December 7 1944 , to enlist in theUnited States Navy . He was reelected in 1944, and served until his death at age 53 inWashington, D.C. onJanuary 10 1967 ; he was interred in St. Ann’s Cemetery, in Cranston.The John Fogarty Memorial Hospital now the RI Rehabilitation Hospital in
Woonsocket, Rhode Island is named after him, as well as theJohn E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences at theNational Institutes of Health inBethesda, Maryland .External links
