Thomas M. Hughes was one of seven children (five sisters, one brother) of the Welsh bishop
Joshua Hughes (1807-1889) and Margaret Hughes (née McKenny). His younger brotherJoshua Pritchard Hughes (1847-1938) was bishop of Llandaff.Thomas Hughes married Mary Caroline Weston in 1882.Education and career
Hughes received the first part of his education at
Leamington andLlandovery , and matriculated atTrinity College, Cambridge in 1853, from which he graduated graduated in 1857, and as M.A. in 1867. From 1860-1861, he held the post of secretary to the British consul in Rome, thereafter worked for theBritish Geological Survey until 1873. He returned toCambridge University in 1873, to succeedAdam Sedgwick asWoodwardian Professor of Geology , until his death in 1917.Awards and work
His over 50 research publications, mainly on work performed during his time at the Survey, are mainly about
Precambrian andPalaeozoic formations inWales , as well as of theLake District . He also worked on glacial deposits. Hughes was vice-president of theGeological Society in 1862,F.R.S. in 1889, andLyell Medal recipient 1891.External links
