services=St. Louis Station is an
Amtrak train station serving the city ofSt. Louis, Missouri . The low aesthetic value of the building has rendered it the popular nickname of "Amshak" by many St. Louisans. [ [http://www.frograil.com/railroad/mo.htm Missouri Railfan Sites ] ] The original "Amshack" opened in 1978, upon the closure of the now-restoredSt. Louis Union Station . The current temporary station opened in December2004 , as a precursor to a new multi-modal facility connected to MetroLink's Civic Center station, expected to be complete in September2008 . At present, neither the Civic Center nor Union Station MetroLink stations are convenient to Amtrak riders, and the nearest bus stop is two blocks away. [ [http://www.texaseagle.com/stations/STL.htm/ texaseagle.com] ]A new multi-modal transportation center, known as The Gateway Transportation Center, is under construction. It will serve as a hub for Metro buses, MetroLink rail, Greyhound buses, and Amtrak. The new station is expected to be completed by Fall 2008. Other metropolitan train stations served by Amtrak exist in the suburb of Kirkwood and suburb of Alton, Illinois.
Lincoln Service
The new Lincoln Service was initiated in October 2006 and included two additional daily round trips between St. Louis and
Chicago ,Illinois . "The State House", a Chicago-St. Louis train that ran before the Lincoln Service began, now runs as a Lincoln Service train on the same schedule it ran on before the name change.Nearby
St. Louis Union Station no longer serves cross country passenger rail traffic. OnlySt. Louis MetroLink light rail service is available at Union Station.Current Service
The net effect of this service is that there are currently five trains daily to and from Chicago, two trains daily to and from Kansas City, and one train daily to and from the south (ultimately, to San Antonio).
There is also daily connecting
Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach service toCarbondale, Illinois to and from the "City of New Orleans".References
