Australian Peace Prize

Australian Peace Prize

The Australian Peace Prize is presented annually to an Australian citizen or resident, or to a group based in Australia, for outstanding contributions towards peace. On 4 July 2006, Dr. Helen Caldicott was awarded the inaugural Australian Peace Prize "for her longstanding commitment to raising awareness about the medical and environmental hazards of the nuclear age". The 2007 prize was awarded on 20 December 2007 to Melbourne barrister Julian Burnside QC "for his staunch opposition to mandatory detention and the Pacific Solution, and for doing all in his power to assist refugees fleeing war and persecution in their homelands". The prize is awarded by the Peace Organisation of Australia. [ [http://poa.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=10&Itemid=28 Australian Peace Prize] ]
