*January 21 - Time magazine publishes an unsigned two-page article, "The Homosexual in America." The article includes statements such as " [Homosexuality] is a pathetic little second-rate substitute for reality, a pitiable flight from life. . . . it deserves no encouragement . . . no pretense that it is anything but a pernicious sickness." (Quoted in Eric Marcus, "Making Gay History: The Half-century Fight for Lesbian and Gay Equal Rights" (2002).
*April 21 - The Mattachine Society stages a "Sip-In" at Julius Bar in New York City challenging a New York State Liquor Authority rule prohibiting serving alcohol to homosexuals on the basis that they are disorderly. The court rules that homosexuals can peacefully assemble at bars.
