January 21 -Time magazine publishes an unsigned two-page article, "The Homosexual in America." The article includes statements such as " [Homosexuality] is a pathetic little second-rate substitute for reality, a pitiable flight from life. . . . it deserves no encouragement . . . no pretense that it is anything but a pernicious sickness." (Quoted in Eric Marcus, "Making Gay History: The Half-century Fight for Lesbian and Gay Equal Rights" (2002).
*April 21 - TheMattachine Society stages a "Sip-In" at Julius Bar in New York City challenging aNew York State Liquor Authority rule prohibiting serving alcohol to homosexuals on the basis that they are disorderly. The court rules that homosexuals can peacefully assemble at bars.Births
