Scheibenhard is a French "commune" located in the
Alsace region's department ofBas-Rhin on the German border, continuous with the German village ofScheibenhardt , separated only by a small creek, theLauter .This creek became in 1815 a border due to the
Vienna Congress , but from 1870 to 1918 both sides were reunited in theGerman Empire . In 1872, astronomerJoseph Helffrich was born here.The village is situated in the easternmost corner of the French "Hexagone", an
epithet ofFrance , owing to the shape of its European mainland. A regularhexagon is depicted on France's one- and two-euro coins.In 1999 Scheibenhard had 675 inhabitants. The mayor is Francis Joerger, elected 2001-2008.
