The club was formed in 2006 as a replacement for the town's previous club,
Runcorn F.C. Halton , which resigned from theNorthern Premier League due to financial difficulties. The original Runcorn club's biggest success had been winning the 1981-82Football Conference (then Alliance Premier League) title, although they had failed to reach theFootball League as the league's members had voted against them joining. The new club joined the football league two levels further down the football pyramid, in the
North West Counties Football League Division Two. A groundshare with Witton Albion was arranged at the start of the 2006-07 season, until a suitable ground can be found inRuncorn .The club was able to enlist the services of several players who had played for the old Runcorn club at a much higher level, including the returning management team of player/manager Steve Carragher and player/assistant Mark Philips, goalkeeper Robbie Holcroft and striker Thomas Lamb, instantly establishing itself as a title contender. Things started well for the new club with a 4–0 away win against Ashton Town, followed immediately by a 5–0 victory at home to Castleton Gabriels. Runcorn eventually finished their inaugural season as runners-up, marginally losing out on the league title to Winsford United on goal difference (a margin of 5 goals), but still winning promotion as a result of finishing second. Lamb finished the season as top scorer, with 22 goals in all competitions, and attracted interest from several professional clubs.
In their first season in the higher tier, they finished in mid-table. During the 2008 close season, the league renamed its divisions, so Runcorn Linnets are currently members of
North West Counties Football League Premier Division.Current squad
