53rd Grey Cup

53rd Grey Cup

The 53rd Grey Cup, also known as the Wind Bowl, was hosted at CNE Stadium in Toronto, Ontario on November 27, 1965. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 22-16.

Game Summary

The game was dominated by a strong wind blowing the length of the field. In the third quarter, with Winnipeg facing the wind, Bombers' coach Bud Grant instructed quarterback Kenny Ploen to concede a series of safety touches to retain possession of the ball. In the fourth quarter with the wind at their backs, the Bombers began a last-minute drive which was snuffed out when Winnipeg fullback Art Perkins was stopped cold on a third-and-one gamble.

Trivia

As a result of the strategy employed by the Bombers, the rules were changed for the 1966 season to provide that a team scoring a safety touch is entitled to possession of the ball after the score.
