Uniform dialing plan

Uniform dialing plan

In telephony, a uniform dialing plan (UDP) means that you can dial a number the same way from wherever you are. The system may be "permissive", rather than "required", in that there may be shortcuts for dialing local numbers.

For example, the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is evolving toward a uniform dialing plan, with ten-digit numbers including the area code. (The one exception to the uniformity is that in many areas it is necessary to dial an initial "1" before a toll call). Thus, if a number is 206-555-1212, with 206 as the area code, it is possible to dial the number the same way (although possibly with a toll-call prefix) anywhere in the NANP zone. It may be permissible to dial the number as just 555-1212 within the 206 area, but even within that area it should be "possible" to dial the number as 206-555-1212.
