Nguyễn Phú Trọng

Nguyễn Phú Trọng (born April 14, 1944, in Hanoi) is the National Assembly Chairman of Vietnam. He was confirmed by the National Assembly on June 26, 2006, with 84.58% of votes in favor. He is also one of 14 current members of the Communist Party of Viet Nam's Political Bureau (Politburo).

Biography

Mr. Nguyễn Phú Trọng was born on April 14, 1944 in Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh District, Ha Noi. He studied philology at the University of Ha Noi from 1963 to 1967. He worked for the Tạp chí Cộng Sản (Communist Review), the theoretical and political agency of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (formerly Lao Động Party), in the periods of 1967-1973, 1976-1980, and 1983-1996. From 1991 to 1996, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Tạp chí Cộng Sản. Mr. Trọng officially joined the Communist Party in December 1968.Mr. Trọng went to the USSR in 1981 to study at the USSR Academy of Social Sciences and got the Kandidat nauk degree in history in 1983.Mr. Trọng has been member of the Party's Central Committee since January 1994, member of the Party's Political Bureau since December 1997, and deputy to the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam since May 2002.From January 2000 to June 2006, Mr. Trọng served as the Secretary of the Party's Executive Committee of Ha Noi, the "de facto" head of the city authority. On June 26, 2006, Mr. Trọng was elected as the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
