The Personal Health Information Protection Act, known by its acronym PHIPA (typically pronounced 'pee-hip-ah'), is legislation that outlines privacy regulations for health information custodians in Ontario, Canada. PHIPA is intended to be substantially similar to, and thus replace, the Canadian federal privacy legislation, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. These acts regulate the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, including materials pertaining to one's health care. Breaches of PHIPA are directed to the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner.
