Yashima island

Yashima, a roof-shaped mesa headland sticking out into the sea in the northeast of Takamatsu, used to be an island before the Edo period. It was a hub of traffic through a strait between Honshu and Shikoku in ancient days and an important military landmark. No one can deny its matchless location to command a stunning panoramic view of the Inland Sea dotted with jewels of small islands. Yashima is about 8 km away from the heart of the city. To reach the summit, you can take Route 11 and then the Yashima Driveway toll road, which has a mysterious span. A walk starting from Kotoden Katamoto Station, going up the hillside and following the trail on the top of Hokurei(North Ridge) all the way to the tip of the headland called Nagasakinohana is quite inviting in fair weather. It takes around three and a half hours. This area is an old battlefield, where the Heikes expelled out of Kyoto and the Genji troops commanded by Minamotono Yoshitsune fought fierecely in 1185. The history and legends are told dramatically in the Story of the Heike clan.A stroll along the trail on the top takes you to the three lookout platforms of Dankorei, Yukakutei, Shishinoreigan, where visitors can get a bird's eye view of the historic sites such as Nasuno yoichi's Oginomato, Yoshitsune's Yuminagashi, Funakakushi. Other features on the top of the hill include Yashimaji Temple, the 84th of the holy places of Shikoku Pilgrimage, with its treasure house, as well as Yashima sanjo Aquarium.
