The Beverly Hills Playhouse is one of Los Angeles’ oldest and most respected acting schools. Founded by renowned director and teacher Milton Katselas, the BHP has for over thirty years offered ongoing intensive scene-study classes for both the professional actor and those who are looking to develop themselves into professional actors.
The BHP is one of the only schools that not only teaches the craft of Acting, but also Attitude and Administration - namely the development of a professional point of view, as well as smarts about the business end of the acting career. With regard to acting technique, the BHP uses Katselas' approach, which is decidedly independent of the major acting philosophies of Stanislavski, Strasberg, Adler, Meisner, Hagen, etc. His experience as a director led him to a highly individual and adaptive way of training actors, mostly based in the simple observation and recreation of human behavior. It is a down-to-earth training, with vastly reduced emphasis on exercises, and with easily-applied techniques to create full, believable performances that enlighten and entertain.
The BHP operates out of its headquarters in Beverly HIlls, but also has a satellite operation in Los Feliz at the Skylight Theatre. It also has an in-house non-profit theatre company called Camelot Artists, which since 1984 has produced hundreds of theatre productions, largely originated and fulfilled by the talent and interests of the BHP students.
With first-rate facilities, a veteran teaching staff, and a vibrant community of actors and artists aspiring to the highest standards of both craft and career, the BHP offers everything the Los Angeles actor needs to develop his or her talent to the fullest, and put their dreams into action.
