Clark County School District Police Department

Clark County School District Police Department

Clark County School District Police Department is the part of the Clark County School District that is responsible for law enforcement on all of the district campuses. As sworn officers, the department members handle all crimes committed on campus and in the areas around the schools. They usually work with other agencies, like the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in cases of serious crimes like murders. The head of the department is the Chief of School Police, and was held by Filberto Arroyo until September 30, 2011 when he stepped down and was placed on administrative leave under investigation [1]

As of June 2006, the department employed over 165 law enforcement officers. The schools patrolled are located across Clark County, Nevada, which is larger in area then the state of New Jersey. Their jurisdiction is spread out over 8,000 square miles (21,000 km2) and for the 2005-2006 school year the department was responsible for over 300,000 students and associated teachers, staff and buildings.

History

The department was formed in 1967 but it was not until 1971 that the state legislature granted the officers in the department status as police officers.

The department received funding for 31 officers from the Community Oriented Policing Services division in the United States Department of Justice.[2]

On July 7, 2007, Nevada Revised Statutes expanded the patrol areas for school police to include traffic duty in areas adjacent to school properties.[3]
