James H. Dolan, S.J. (born on
June 4 ,1885 inRoxbury, Massachusetts ) was one of the founders and the 2nd President ofFairfield University located inFairfield, Connecticut from1944 to1951 . During his seven year tenure,Fairfield University was chartered by the State of Connecticut to grant degrees in 1945; the first class of 303 male students was admitted to theFairfield College of Arts and Sciences in 1947; and theFairfield College of Arts and Sciences was accredited by the State of Connecticut and the first summer session of undergraduate courses was held in 1949. Before arriving at Fairfield University, Father Dolan had been President ofBoston College 1925 to 1932 where he founded theBoston College Law School and the Provincial Superior of the New England Jesuit Province from 1937 to 1944.
