After three seasons with the Parramatta Eels, Ryan was unable to establish himself in the first-grade team and accepted a contract with the Bulldogs for 2003. His second season with the Bulldogs, 2004, was personally and professionally successful with a return to State of Origin, selection at international level and captaining the Bulldogs to a Grand Final win over the
Sydney Roosters .Representative selection
Ryan was selected to represent New South Wales as variously a second-rower or lock in five series to the end of 2007:
* games II and III of the 2001 State of Origin series
* games I and II of the 2004 State of Origin series
* games I, II and III of the 2005 State of Origin series
* games I and II of the 2006 State of Origin series
* games I, II and III of the 2007 State of Origin series
* He was selected at lock for the 2008 city V country clash at WIN stadium.Ryan is also a mainstay of the Australian Kangaroos, appearing in three Tri-Nations series in 2004, 2005 and 2006 as well as a Test against France in 2005 and most recently in the 2007
