homepage = [http://www.setxhomepage.com/ www.setxhomepage.com]KBTV-TV Channel 4 is the
NBC affiliate serving the Beaumont /Port Arthur, Texas market. It's licensed to Port Arthur. Its studios are in Beaumont with an office in Port Arthur. It airs on cable channel 2 on systems in the immediate portion of the market.History
It began on
July 15 ,1957 as KPAC, owned by the Jefferson Amusement Company. In 1960 it changed call letters to KJAC (more inline with its owners initals AND to disassociate itself from KPAC radio, owned by the Port Arthur College) and then the present KBTV-TV in 1999 to align itself more into the Beaumont audience.The station was the first in the area to broadcast in color, use video tape, and air live coverage of area high school football games.
Among the original programming that originated at KPAC/KJAC's studios were wrestling, the kid's western show "Cowboy John", afternoon Bingo and the Circle 4 Club. During the 50's the station also had the only local teen dance program - "Jive At Five". Both "Cowboy John" and "Jive At Five" had Colored days. These were the only times that Negroes were allowed to participate.
The station is unique because it broadcasts out of
Parkdale Mall located in Beaumont. As such, KBTV is the first television station in the country to have its studios located inside a major shopping center.KBTV picked up its current call sign when channel 69 in
Des Moines, Iowa stopped using it in 1999.Fact|date=September 2008 Before that, this was used by channel 9 inDenver, Colorado (now KUSA).News/Station Presentation
