municipality in theKendujhar district of the state ofOrissa ,India .The region around Barbil has the fifth largest deposit of iron ore and manganese ore in the world. It is a major source of revenue generation for both the central and the state government. The residents of Barbil unfortunately do not get any benefits out of the revenue generated. The basic infrastructure particularly the roads (roads leading towards Rourkela and Tatanagar are at a Misarable state 80Km towards each side, It takes 6 to 8 hours to reach

As of 2001 Indiacensus , [GR|India] Barbil had a population of 52,586. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Barbil has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 69% of the males and 59% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.Industry
Barbil is an industrialised town with a number of plants, crushers and mines around. This place is very rich in iron ore other minerals found are manganese ore. The latest demand is for Iron Ore Fines which are being exported to China. Steel is manufactured and liquid oxygen is also produced here. In this area a large number of industries have grown up. Pig Iron and Spun Pipes are manufactured at Kalinga Iron Works, (A State Govt Undertaking under Idicol). It remains to seen how the new government directive increasing the cost of export of raw iron ore affects the economy of Barbil town.Good news for people of the region- Arya Iron & Steel Co (P) Ltd has opened its Iron Ore Pellet plant here, it is only the third plant after Vizag and Chennai ones to use such technology.
Transport
Barbil is connected to
Kolkata andJamshedpur by train. It connected to major cities by road, it is also connected to Kolkata, Kendujhar andBhubaneswar by road. Before January 2008, there was air service from Barbil (Airport at Bhadarsashi about 7 km from Barbil) to Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. But now air service is stoped due to poor passenger occupancy and hight fare.References
