Gábor Egressy [IPA|ˈgaːbor ˈɛgrɛʃi] (
circa 1808 inSajólaszlófalva in the former KomitatBorsod ; -30 July 1866 in Pest) was a Hungarianactor and brother ofBéni Egressy .Life
His exact date of birth is not known. After he belonged to several rover actor ensembles, he found at the
theater in Klausenburg a permanent engagement. Later he fulfilled his artistic education inVienna and was since 1837 one of the most important actors at the new openedHungarian National Theater in Pest.He was responsible for bringing the
drama s ofWilliam Shakespeare to the Hungarian stage in his mother tongue.In the turbulent
revolution of 1848 and 1849 he was sent as agovernment commissar to the lower-Tisza area, but was recalled for carrying out his duties too rigorously. He returned to the stage, but escaped toTurkey after therepression of the revolution. In 1854 he was allowed to return, exempt frompunishment .
