Ugljan (Italian: "Ugliano") is a Croatian
island in theZadar Archipelago , northwest of the island ofPašman and southeast of the islands ofRivanj andSestrunj ; area 50.21 km²; population 7.583 (length 22 km, width up to 3.8 km). Separated from the mainland by theZadar Channel; connected with the island ofPašman by a bridge spanning over theŽdrelac Strait. Thelimestone part of the island is covered predominantly withmacchia , while thedolomite area is occupied by farmland. Larger coves areMuline in the northwest, andLamjana Vela andLamjana Mala in the south-east. The eastern coast descends mildly to the sea, characterized by many indents.Ugljan is one of the most densely populated
Croatia n islands. All settlements (Preko , Ugljan,Lukoran ,Sutomišćica ,Poljana , Kali,Ošljak andKukljica ) are situated along the coast of the cultivated eastern side of the island. Major crops includeolive s, figs andvine s. Set high above Preko are the ruins ofCastle Štefano . Ugljan has a regional road connected by the bridge with the regional road running along the island ofPašman . Ferry port inPreko ; ferry connections withZadar .The island was first mentioned under its present name in
1325 . The continuity of population dates back to theNeolithic . Densely populated during the Roman period, in particular its north-western parts, where ample ruins of ancient buildings have been found. The present settlements date back to theMiddle Ages .
