Boizenburg is a municipality in the district of Ludwigslust, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is situated on the right bank of the Elbe, 53 km west of Ludwigslust, 25 km northeast of Lüneburg and 50 km east of Hamburg.

Boizenburg is just a few kilometers inside of the old GDR. The town has a number of communist "relics" including large paintings and mosaics on the sides of many of the barrack-like apartment buildings that showcase the gloriousness of communism. The highway just north of town is paralleled by a low hill just high enough to keep curious passers-by from being able to see the town. An old border checkpoint "(Horst)" is located a few kilometers west of town on the way to Lauenburg. The old part of town is typical of many German towns and villages while the primary residential sector north of town is dominated by communist architecture.

History

Until April 30 1945 a Nazi concentration camp was established in Boizenburg. The camp was a subcamp to the Neuengamme concentration camp. [The camp is listed as No. 150 Boizenburg, Kreis Hagenow in the official German list.]
