Poing is a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Ebersberg, lying 18 km east of central Munich.

Geography

Poing lies in the area served by the Munich S-Bahn and is part of that city’s commuter area. Poing has two constituent communities named Angelbrechting and Grub. In the east, the community borders on Anzing and Markt Schwaben, in the north on the community of Pliening, in the west on Kirchheim and in the south on Parsdorf.

History

It is believed that Poing has been settled for more than 5,000 years. The ending on the community’s name suggests a Celtic origin .

Population development

Over the last few decades, Poing has developed rapidly from a small village into the second biggest community in the S-Bahn line 2 (S2) area (up to Erding) and into the second biggest community in Ebersberg district after Vaterstetten. In 2006, it overtook the once dominant neighbouring community of Kirchheim. The sharp rise in population owes itself to the many new building projects going up north of the S-Bahn line, to which no end is yet foreseen. Therefore, even more development is expected.

Politics

The political parties currently represented on Poing’s municipal council are the CSU, the SPD, the Greens, the FWG Poing e. V. and the FDP.

The last mayoral election was held on 12 March 2006. With a voter turnout of 55.86%, the incumbent mayor Albert Hingerl (SPD) earned 79.24% of the vote, once again handily defeating his challenger Ludwig Berger (CSU).

Coat of arms

Poing’s arms might heraldically be described thus: In azure a fess argent upon which a chevron Or below which an eight-pointed star argent.

From the Poing patrician family Prielmair’s arms came both the star and the chevron. The shield’s colour and the silver fess hearken back to the community’s former fast link with the House of Wittelsbach.

Culture and sightseeing

The "Wildpark Poing", opened in 1970, lies near the community. In some parts of this park, visitors go through outdoor enclosures containing various kinds of animal, which anyone may feed, and which are not kept behind fences.

Economy and infrastructure

Transport

There are S-Bahn stops at Poing and Grub (Obb.) on the Munich S-Bahn’s S2 (Erding-Petershausen). Also originally planned was a stop at the Océ works, but this was never realized.

Highway connections include Autobahn A 94 (Munich-Passau) from Parsdorf/Poing, and from Hohenlinden Bundesstraße B 12 (towards Passau).

The FTO ("Flughafen-Tangente-Ost", an airport access road), which is to join the A 94 with the airport, will be built east of the community within a few years in a north-south direction, thus improving Poing’s connections with Erding and the airport.

Established businesses

The biggest business in town is the firm Océ Printing Systems, a daughter company of the Dutch printing and copying specialists Océ. At the Poing plant, with roughly 1,500 workers, high-performance printers are developed and produced. Moreover, the following firms are to be found:
*Tengelmann
*Avnet EM (Silica, Time, Memec, EBV, ALS)
*Stahlgruber, car replacement parts and accessories, founded in 1923

Famous people

The Bavarian State Minister for Labour and Social Order, Family and Women, Christa Stewens, lives with her family in the community of Poing.
