Geography

Buscemi is 52 km (32 miles) west of Syracuse, Sicily. It is located on Hyblaean Mountains, precisely on the mountain Vinnitti (783 m high above sea level), and the river Anapo it crosses the territory. The municipalities closer are Buccheri and Palazzolo Acreide, which are both less than ten kilometers.

History

The region was not only home to saracens and normans, but it is also believed that were inhabitants during the Bronze Age. Its name is derived from the Arab term "Qalat-abi-sciama" until the Latin term "Buxema". During the devastating earthquake in 1693, Buscemi was completely razed to the ground, then rebuilding began at the city centre and much was improved compared to the previous year. Some families who held possession of Buscemi were Ventimiglia and Requisenz, the latter remain the ruins of the castle entrance of the town.
