Wall Township Speedway

Wall Township Speedway

Wall Township Speedway, originally named Wall Stadium, was a race track in Wall Township, New Jersey. It opened in 1950 and operated through the 2007 racing season. It has 30 degree banking in the turns and 16 degree banking in the straightaways. It brought up racing stars Ray Evernham and Martin Truex Jr. Fact|date=September 2007 It hosted one NASCAR Strictly Stock Series (now Sprint Cup) event in 1958. Fact|date=September 2007Wall Township Speedway is a member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Wall Township Speedway hosted a Featherlite Modified Series in 2003, 2004, and 2007. Well known drivers that race or have raced at Wall include Gil Hearne, John Blewett III,Jimmy Blewett, Jimmy Spencer, and Richie Evans.

Since 1974, the track's signature race was the annual "Turkey Derby" held on Thanksgiving weekend. The race format changed over the years, from three 50-lap features, with the best average finish in the three races winning, to the eventual format of two races; the first was a 100-lap feature for the SK Modified cars, an entry-level form of the car initiated by Jack Arute, Sr., at Stafford Motor Speedway.Fact|date=September 2007 The second was another 100-lap feature for Tour-type Modifieds, for cars similar to those used in the two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours. The end-of-season races for most classes running at Wall also took place at Thanksgiving weekend, and sometimes Nextel Cup superstars raced in the event.

It was announced on March 14, 2008 that the track would be closed, as two of the four owners will buy out the other two. The two that are buying out the others are not interested in opening the track, so Wall is now another track lost in New Jersey. Flemington Speedway closed in 2000, East Windsor Speedway in 2002, and Wall Township Speedway in 2008.

However, it was officially announced that Wall Township Speedway would run its Turkey Derby race again in 2008.
