James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde and 2nd Earl of Ossory was born in 1496 and died on 28 October 1546, the victim of an (apparently accidental) incident of mass poisoning along with 17 members of his household. He was the son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald. He was created, in 1535, Viscount Thurles, and was confirmed by Act of Parliament, 6 November 1541, in the Earldom of Ormonde, as 9th Earl with the pre-eminence of the original Earls. He married with Lady Joan FitzGerald, daughter and heiress of 11th Earl of Desmond, and had issue

Married, secondly, Elizabeth Berkeley, daughter of Thomas Berkeley, 6th Lord Berkeley and Anne Savage, had issue. Married, thirdly, Hon. Helena Barry, daughter of David Barry, 5th Viscount Barry, without issue.
*Sir Edmund Butler (d. 1602), married with Hon. Eleanor Eustace, daughter of 2nd Viscount Baltinglass, and had issue.
*John Butler (b. b 1546-1570), married with Katherine MacCartie, daughter of Cormac MacCartie, the MacCartie Reagh and had issue.
