It is a large building on several levels and includes a range of high street shops and privately-owned boutiques. It is also home to the city's museum, art gallery and central library. The northern entrance is on John Frost Square, a Germanic-style shopping square.

The centre is currently undergoing a massive refurbishment and extension, in conjunction with the new Friars Walk mall.
