USS Viperfish (SSN-655)

USS Viperfish (SSN-655)

No ship of the United States Navy has been named USS "Viperfish", presumably for the viperfish, a grotesque, deep-diving, bioluminescent member of the genus "Chauliodus".

"Viperfish" (SSN-655) is the pseudonym given by Roger C. Dunham to the eponym of his book "Spy Sub" so that it would pass security screening for classified material while remaining a "true story." The photographs in the book show USS Halibut (SSGN-587). No United States Navy ship has ever been designated SSN-655; SSBN-655 was "Henry L. Stimson".
