Prudhoe Mill

Prudhoe Mill

Prudhoe Mill is the name given to the SCA Hygiene Products paper mill in Prudhoe, Northumberland, England. The factory is near the River Tyne in the Low Prudhoe Industrial estate.

Products

The factory makes toilet rolls and kitchen rolls, and has recently been upgraded to be the only factory in the UK capable of making three-plied toilet paper.

The Factory

Originally built by Kimberly-Clark, the mill was bought by SCA after the Monopolies Commission forced Kimberly-Clark to sell. The factory consists of the mill, housing the paper machines, converting lines, warehousing and Unifibres. The factory draws the water it needs to make and recycle paper directly from the River Tyne. It is cleaned, before being pumped back in, cleaner than when it came out.

Warehouses

The most visible buildings on the factory site are the warehouses. There is a high-bay warehouse, and a new warehouse that is just being completed. The new warehouse, builty by an Austrian company and called the DACW building, is currently the tallest in the country. The dark green colour was chosen by members of the community, amongst whom there was much consternation regarding the building.

Benefit to the community

Recently SCA has allowed the local Explorer Scout group and Ranger unit to use the warehouses 40m high internal steps to climb the equivalent of the height of Everest, the participants began at 7:30 on Wednesday the 27th of June climbing the stairs about 16 times each to obtain a total ascent greater than that of Everest.

The groups who are raising funds for a trip to Iceland are very grateful for the assistance that SCA has provided by allowing this event to take place.
