*San Francisco, California prohibits employment discrimination based on sexual orientation in the public sector. The city also prohibits companies that have contracts with the city from discriminating based on sexual orientation.

*January 1 - Hawaii repeals sodomy laws.

April

*April 1 - Delaware decriminalizes consensual homosexual acts between adults.

May

*May 2 - J. Edgar Hoover dies and leaves most of his estate to Clyde Tolson, his companion of 40 years.

June

*June 27 - "Gay News" the first UK gay magazine hits newsstands.

July

* July 10 - Ann Arbor, Michigan becomes the first American city to ban discrimination against homosexuals in housing, public accommodation, and employment.
* July 12 - Delegate Jim Foster becomes the first openly gay person to address a major American party convention at the 1972 Democratic National Convention.
