The line was completed in 1974 by the formerJapanese National Railways to provide faster access from theKansai region to theHokuriku region . It originates atYamashina Station in Yamashina-ku,Kyoto and ends atOmi-Shiotsu Station in Nishiasai, Ika District,Shiga Prefecture .Its name means "the line to the west of the lake," indicating that it skirts
Lake Biwa along its western shore. Trains continue from Yamashina toKyoto Station on theTōkaidō Main Line for convenient transfer to lines serving theKansai as well as theTōkaidō Shinkansen .The section from Nagahara to Omi-Shiotsu was reelectrificated to 1,500 V DC on
September 24 ,2006 , and the Special Rapid (新快速) through train service from Kyoto Line (Tokaido Main Line ) was extended beyond Omi-Shiotsu, the line terminus, to Tsuruga on theHokuriku Main Line .Data
