Weld Club

Weld Club

The Weld Club is a gentlemen's club in Perth, Western Australia, founded in 1871 by former British military officers. It was named after the then Governor of Western Australia, Sir Frederick Weld with the club building designed by Talbot Hobbs and constructed in 1892. Governor Weld was the first patron of the club. Foundation members were recruited almost exclusively from senior military ranks with the colony, but these were gradually joined by men from pioneer families and men with mining or pastoral interests.

The last resident members left in 1979. A portion of the club grounds were leased to fund the 1980s restoration of the historic building. The Club continues its tradition of a Gentlemen only membership.

Building

The club building is located opposite the Supreme Court of Western Australia on the corner of Barrack Street and The Esplanade.

The Club building is listed by Heritage Council of Western Australia. The Building is described as: a two-storey Federation Queen Anne style brick and timber building with prominent tower belvedere located in landscaped grounds, the perimeter of which is marked by brick boundary walls. The place has close associations with the exercise of political and social power in the Colony before representative government. The Weld Club is recognised as Western Australia's leading gentlemen's club.
