Michael Chekhov Studio London

The Michael Chekhov Studio London (MCSL) provides space for actor-artists to experience an imaginative and holistic approach to the art of acting.

Rooted firmly in the Michael Chekhov’s technique, the MCSL trains actors in Chekhov’s fundamental psycho-physical (body-soul) exercises and builds the actor’s capacity for concentration, imagination and spontaneity. Chekhov’s acting tools include exercises in Centres and the Imaginary Body, Improvisation and Ensemble, Psychological Gesture, Atmospheres and Characterisation.

Contrary to Stanislavsky’s early acting methodology, Chekhov taught his students to seeks characters and scenes in the imagination, and not in the intellect or in concrete life stories.

With patrons British actor Simon Callow and American actress Mala Powers (executrix of the Chekhov Literary Estate), the MCSL was established in 2003 with the increasing interest in Chekhov’s work, which, until the early 1990s was largely unknown in the UK.

Led by Graham Dixon, actor, director and co-founder of the Michael Chekhov Centre UK the MCSL is a place where actors can experience, research and further Chekhov’s approach to acting and the theatre of the future.
