100 Words

100 Words

100 Words is an online collaborative writing project in which participants "write 100 words, no more, no less, every day".

History

100 Words was started in 2001 by Jeff Koyen. Originally, the idea was to write 100 words every day for 100 days, but after the first batch (in which Koyen himself participated), 100 days was deemed to be too long. Hence, the duration of each batch was shortened to one month, and it has remained thus.

Word of the project quietly spread, and by mid-2002, the site had logged ten thousand daily entries from participants all over the world.

After over seven million words having been logged on the original, 100words.net [http://100words.net] has been moved to 100words.com [http://www.100words.com] . This incarnation contains new site features and an easier interface.

Rules

*Participants are expected to write on that day and for that day. Writing ahead or catching up is highly frowned upon, as the purpose of the project is to capture life on a daily basis.
*All entries must be exactly 100 words in length. Participants are expected to pick one standard for counting their words and stick to it.
*Each participant is allowed to miss one day of writing their 100 words and not be disqualified. However, they are required to make it up as soon as they realize they missed it.

Most of the rules listed above operate solely on the honor system, because participants need not log their entries daily, so long as all entries are in by the end of the month.
