James H. Foran (born 1848 in
New York - diedJanuary 30 ,1928 inLos Angeles, California ) is a formerMajor League Baseball player. He was a participant in what is regarded by the Baseball Hall of Fame as the first MLB game ever played, which was a contest between theFort Wayne Kekiongas and theCleveland Forest Citys onMay 4 ,1871 .A
first baseman andoutfielder , Foran appeared in nineteen games in theNational Association that season, as a member of the Kekiongas. He had a .348 batting average with 31 hits in 89 at bats, and was by far the best hitter on the squad:Frank Selman finished second among the team's regulars at .231. Foran also led the team in hits,runs scored ,RBI , andtriples , and tied for the team lead inhome runs , with one.The Kekiongas franchise folded after compiling a 7-12 record through nineteen games, finishing seventh among the nine teams in the league, and after that season, Foran never again played in MLB.
