Public holidays in South Korea

In South Korea, each public holiday belongs to one or more of three possible categories: National Celebration Day(국경일, 國慶日), National Flag Raising Day(국기게양일, 國旗揭揚日) and/or Public Day Off(공휴일, 公休日). Because each of these three categories has a different legal basis, a certain holiday may or may not be considered all three. (However, all National Celebration Days are Flag Raising Days.)

National Celebration Days

The days celebrates national happy event. It is the beginning that Indepedence Declaration Day(March 1) was first stipulated by the Law of U.S. Military Government in Korea No.2(군정법률 제2호 "경축일공포의관한건") [ [http://klaw.go.kr/CNT2/LawContent/MCNT2Right.jsp?lawseq=63077&keyword=%ea%b5%ad%ea%b2%bd%ec%9d%bc%ec%97%90%ea%b4%80%ed%95%9c%eb%b2%95%eb%a5%a0 慶祝日公布의關한件(The Law Concerning Proclamation of a Celebration Day)] ] in 1946. After the establishment of the Government of the Republic of Korea in 1948, four major National Celebration Days(Indepedence Declaration Day, Constitution Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day) were provided by "The Law Concerning the National Celebration Days"(국경일에관한법률) [ [http://klaw.go.kr/CNT2/LawContent/MCNT2Right.jsp?lawseq=72262&keyword=%ea%b5%ad%ea%b2%bd%ec%9d%bc%ec%97%90%ea%b4%80%ed%95%9c%eb%b2%95%eb%a5%a0 국경일에 관한 법률(The Law Concerning the National Celebration Days)] ] in 1949. In 2005, Hangul Day became the 5th National Celebration day.

National Flag Raising Days

All the National Celebration Days, January 1, Memorial Day(half staff), Armed Forces Day are provided by Article 8 of the "National Flag Law"(대한민국국기법 제8조)) [ [http://klaw.go.kr/CNT2/LawContent/MCNT2Right.jsp?lawseq=77151&keyword=%eb%8c%80%ed%95%9c%eb%af%bc%ea%b5%ad%ea%b5%ad%ea%b8%b0%eb%b2%95 대한민국국기법(National Flag Law)] ] . On these days, it is promoted to raise taegukgi at every house and every roadside.

Public Days Off

They are provided by "Ordinance Concerning the Holidays of Government and Public Offices"(관공서의 공휴일에 관한 규정) [ [http://klaw.go.kr/CNT2/LawContent/MCNT2Right.jsp?lawseq=75972&keyword=%ea%b3%b5%ed%9c%b4%ec%9d%bc 관공서의 공휴일에 관한 규정(Ordinance Concerning the Holidays of Government and Public Offices)] ] . This ordinance is originally applied to only government and public offices, but most of individual business offices are also following it.
