Eurovision Song Contest 2006 , Armenia's debut at the Contest. Performed in English by André, it opened the semi-final (being followed byBulgaria 'sMariana Popova singing "Let Me Cry ") before being performed last in the final (followingSibel Tüzün 's "Süper Star " forTurkey ), having qualified in 6th position with 150 points. In the final, André received 129 points, including the maximum 12 from
Russia and 10 fromTurkey , to finish 8th and ensure Armenia an automatic final berth for theEurovision Song Contest 2007 .The song itself is an energetic dance number, with influences of the ethnic styles which have proven popular over recent years (
BBC commentatorTerry Wogan referred to the song as having "a whiff of the souk" about it). Indeed, comparisons have been drawn toSertab Erener 's performance in 2003, as the presentation involved what were variously referred to as "ropes", "braces" and "tapes" with which André and his dancers would suspend each other at different points of the song.
Lyrically, André sings about being without the love of another and the questions which run through his mind in this situation. Some of these questions do not make perfect grammatical sense in English ("What I have in my mind without your love?"), but the meaning is generally clear. It was succeeded as Armenian representative at the
Eurovision Song Contest 2007 byHayko with "Anytime You Need ".
