Roland Kökény, born
24 October 1975 inMiskolc , is a Hungarian flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion.At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, he competed in the individual (K-1) kayak, reaching the semi-finals.
He then became a member of the Hungarian four-man (K-4) crew that won world championship silver medals in 2001 and 2003 as well as a European silver in 2002. For the 2004 Olympic season however he lost his place to
Gábor Horváth . The Hungarians went on to win the Olympic gold at Athens but without the unfortunate Kökény. Instead he again competed in the individual K-1 1000m, this time finishing sixth in the final.Kökény did however win his first major international title that year as Hungary's second-string K-4 crew of Benkő / Beé / Kucsera / Kökény won the European 500m gold at
Poznań , Poland.In 2005 he switched to the K-2, partnering Gabor Kucsera. A European silver medal in the 1000m was followed by victory at the World Championships in
Zagreb , Croatia.In 2006 Kökény was back in Hungary's premier K4 boat, winning the 1000m gold medal at the World Championships on home waters in
Szeged . Kökény is a member of theBudapest Honvéd FC club. He is 185 (6'1") tall and weighs 82 kg (180 lbs).
