- Raglan Mines, Quebec
The Raglan Mines is a large
nickel mining complex in theNunavik region of northernQuebec ,Canada . It is located approximately 100 kilometers south of Deception Bay. It was owned by theToronto -basedFalconbridge Ltd. which was bought byXstrata .The complex operates the
Kattiniq/Donaldson Airport and there is also a gravel road leading to a port on Deception Bay, and the village of Salluit. It is the only road of any distance in the province north of the 55th parallel. Since the complex is remote from even the region'sInuit communities, workers must lodge there, sometimes for weeks at a time.Though the complex was created with the participation of the Inuit owned
Makivik Corporation , with the hopes of attracting employment for local residents, only a small minority of the workers are Inuit from the region. Most are French-speakers from the southern part of the province. Given the cultural mix at the complex, ethnic origin and discrimination are significant on-site issues [ [http://www.theglobeandmail.com/series/apartheid/stories/20011214-1.html Globe and Mail article dated December 14, 2001] ] .External links
