Misc = "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" is a song written byJack Keller andHoward Greenfield . It was first recorded byConnie Francis on April 7, 1960, at New York's Olmstead Studios. A second version with an alternate orchestration was recorded on June 16, 1960 but remained unreleased and is now considered as lost.Francis' original April 1960 version went to number one on the
Billboard Hot 100 onJune 27 ,1960 for two weeks. It was Francis' first number one hit in theUnited States . Originally, "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" was intended to be the B-Side of MGM Records Single K 12899, the Italian/English recording "Tango della Gelosia (Jealous of you)" being the A-Side. But when the song gained an unexpected success, it was given the A-Side-Status.Connie Francis also recorded the song in German under the title "Die Liebe ist ein seltsames Spiel". This recording became Germany's best-selling single of 1960. Contrary to popular belief, the German version is the only foreign language version cut by Francis herself. But there are - among others - cover versions in Swedish ("Tunna skivor", recorded by
Siw Malmkvist ) and Finnish ("Pajunköyttä", recorded by Marketta Joutsi). The success of the German version prompted Francis to add other languages to her recording repertoire, which also included rather unusual languages for an American singer, such as Dutch and Swedish.
Debby Boone recorded a country version of the song in 1979, peaking at #48 on theHot Country Songs chart.
