Sydney Aquarium opened in 1988 after tender by the NSW Government, and financed by private investors and finance groups. In 1988, it was the subject of a leveraged buyout by an investor group and, in June 1993, became a publicly listed company on the
Australian Stock Exchange . In February 1999 Sydney Aquarium purchased Oceanworld Manly, a smaller aquarium situated on Manly Cove. Shark Dive Xtreme was launched at Oceanworld Manly in July 2003.In July 2004, Sydney Aquarium both purchased Sydney Tower and OzTrek, and also received approval to begin construction of Sydney Wildlife World. The Skywalk opened on Sydney Tower in October 2005, and in November 2005, Sydney Aquarium Group was renamed Sydney Attractions Group to reflect the new nature of the group and its associated businesses.
In February 2008,
Village Roadshow Limited , an Australian film production, exhibition and theme parks company, were successful in a takeover of Sydney Attractions Group after achieving majority shareholding of the company.
