Glory of the Morning

Glory of the Morning (Hoe-poe-kaw in Ho-chunk) was the first woman ever described in the written history of Wisconsin. In 1728 she married a French fur trader named Sabrevoir Descaris. During the time she was chief, the Ho-Chunk and their French trading partners were being harassed by the Fox tribe. Under Glory of the Morning's leadership, the Ho-Chunk allied themselves with the French and fought the Fox tribe in several battles during the 1730s and 1740s. Glory of the Morning lived on Doty Island. Her grandson is said to be Chief Waukon Decorah, from whom two Iowa cities: Waukon, and Decorah take their names.
