Anjelica Selden

Anjelica Selden

Anjelica "Jelly" Selden is an African-American athlete and former All-American who was born in Vallejo, California and attended Vanden High School from 2000 to 2004. She was the starting pitcher for 10-time NCAA Division I Softball National Champions, the UCLA Bruins.

University of California-LA

On February 18, 2005, at the start of her freshman career in the NCAA Division I, Selden struck out 16 through seven-innings for her career high in a regulation game; the Bruins won 2-0 over the Georgia Bulldogs.

Selden would then register a career best 23 strikeouts against Ole Mississippi on March 4, 2005, though the Bruins eventually lost 3-2 in that game.

At the 2005 Women's College World Series, Selden led her team to the championship game where they lost two in the newly established three-games title format to first-time winner Michigan. In game two, Selden struck out 13 to set the championship game record in the three-games setup; UCLA great Debbie Doom holds the ultimate record of 15 strikeouts in the 1984 championship. She ended her season with 485 season strikeouts, a new school mark at UCLA.

April 9, 2007, she broke Keira Georl's all-time UCLA career strikeouts total of 1,095 in a game against Oregon State. Selden closed the season recording 1,106, having become the first softball player of color to break into the NCAA Division I elite 1,000 Strikeouts Club.

In her senior year, Selden pitched the Bruins to their third appearance at the Women's College World Series and a number two team ranking after the Bruins nearly fell out of the top 20 the previous 2007 season. Anjelica would conclude her career with 1,441 strikeouts, which places her 8th best in the all-time NCAA list and clear number one at UCLA. She was honored with Team MVP on June 8, 2008.

Professional Career

In the 2008 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft first round, Selden was selected fourth overall by the New England Riptide. She has yet to play professionally.
