Night-life and popular music of Brighton and Hove

Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom (and particularly the town of Brighton which forms part of the city) is noted as a centre for popular music. Internationally-known artists originating there include The Levellers, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Fish Brothers, Fujiya & Miyagi,British Sea Power,Bat for Lashes, Fatboy Slim, The Kooks, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Bonobo, and The Go! Team. Record labels based there include Skint Records.

There are a large number of pubs, bars and nightclubs in Brighton — over 300 pubs and bars according to a book of July 2006. Fact|date=March 2007 Alcohol consumption on the street (other than in regulated zones directly outside licensed premises) is now banned in many central parts of the town.

Nightclubs include The Zap, The Volks Tavern, Ghetto, The Honey Club, Legends, The Ocean Rooms, Amsterdam, The Event, Charles Street, Funky Buddah Lounge, Audio, Revenge and Arc.

Live music venues (some of which also serve other functions) include Concorde2, The Brighton Dome, The Corn Exchange, The Brighton Centre, The Freebutt, The Pressure Point, Casablanca and the Komedia.

The town has also long been known as a "playground" for Londoners, and as such many famous musicians have made homes in the town; see List of Brighton and Hove inhabitants.

Brighton played a part in pop music history when ABBA received a substantial boost to their early career by winning the Eurovision Song Contest at the Brighton Dome in 1974.

Festivals

Brighton is host to its own arts festivals in and around May each year: the Brighton Festival and Brighton Festival Fringe include popular music events. In addition to these are various smaller events such as the Kemptown Carnival in the Kemptown part of Brighton, and irregular music festivals in locations including Stanmer Park. The Brighton Pride gay festival also has a musical element.

Brighton references in popular music

*The Queen song, "Brighton Rock", named after Graham Greene's 1930s novel Brighton Rock, told a story of two young lovers meeting at Brighton on a public holiday.
*Of Montreal's song "My British Tour Diary" says "Brighton's lovely in the fall".
*Bloc Party's "Waiting for the 7:18" repeats, in the chorus, "Let's drive to Brighton on the weekend".
*The Who's "Pinball Wizard" character plays his game "From Soho down to Brighton".
*Steve Harley (of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel) refers darkly to the town in the song "Red is a mean, mean colour" with the line, "Can you remember being South of Brighton...", and again in the song "Tumbling down" with the line, "See the Titanic sail into Brighton".
*Brighton band Moist wrote "Brighton song" about moving to live in the town.
