- Yevgeny Yufit
Yevgeny Yufit (born
17 January ,1961 in Leningrad) is aRussia nfilmmaker . He was a member of Russia's Parallel Cinema movement, which sought to make films which were aesthetically at odds with the state-run film industry.Yufit first became famous for his macabre short films, which, like the films of
Guy Maddin , often looked as though they had been made during the 1920s or 1930s. In the 1990s, Yufit began making features similar in style to his shorts, with plots often centered aroundgenetic experimentation andpseudoscience . He is often described as a "necrorealist," as he uses elements of horror & science fiction cinema and combines them with the bleakest aspects ofneo-realism to examine humanity's relationship with death and decay. His most famous films are probably his 1985 short, "The Woodcutter", and his first feature, 1992's "Father, Santa Claus Is Dead".
