Southridge School is a K-12 independent coeducational school in south Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. It is a regional school, serving from as far away as Richmond and Ladner, though most students are from the White Rock, South Surrey area.

Facilities

The school has two permanent buildings, two gymnasiums, two libraries, two computer labs, science labs, an auditorium, and three athletic fields (including one FieldTurf field). The construction of Southridge was funded by private donations, largely from parents. Although construction was initially opposed by abutters, amidst claims of potential property devaluation, it was eventually approved by the town board in 1993.

Academics

Southridge School has a typical K-12 curriculum, including for the Senior school students: Physics, Chemistry and Biology (taught with British Columbia standards), and AP courses in these fields as well as in History, Literature, Calculus, and Computer Science.

Arts

The School Arts program includes Music, Fine Arts, Media Arts, and Drama. Achievements by the school in these fields include multiple Zoomfest winners, and multiple Concert Band Festival Awards. The school also hosts an annual Arts Auction.

Southridge is classified as a "Single A" sized school. Southridge has won several Fraser Valley Championships in Basketball, Soccer and Field Hockey. In 2006, Southridge won the Provincial Championship for Tennis and Senior Boys and Girls Soccer.

Traditions

Annually, in the month of November, a Gala is held to showcase the school, for many of its parents and staff. The event also produces income for charitable uses within the School. As well, an annual Concert and Play are organized by the Arts department. During the Spring, a golf tournament is held at nearby Morgan Creek Golf Course to raise funds in support of organizations. Summer camps provide summer activities for youth, including computers and hiking. Surrey Model UN is a new project being undertaken by students to start up a Model United Nations for the Surrey Area. [ [http://www.smun.org SMUN.org] ] Until 2006 the Southridge Senior School had "Spirit Week" consisting of five days where the students were to dress up in costumes related to the theme of the day.

The School is involved with Free the Children and "Leaders Today". These "Non-Governmental Organizations" were established by Craig Kielburger to help prevent poverty and distress in developing nations. Southridge is an exclusive partner with Semiahmoo House a local charity that supports the disabled in the vicinity. The Global Leadership Academy is offered each summer in cooperation with Leaders Today and Free the Children. In 2005, TREK (Teens Running for Every Kid) was created; a 5km run for youth ages 13-19 with 100% of the proceeds donated to building a school in Kenya with the organization Free the Children.

Rankings

For a relatively new school, Southridge has gained National Acclaim by The Fraser Institute, by coming First Place in an annual ranking of High Schools in the province of British Columbia.

*"Speechmaking". The school placing high in the Provincial Championships, as a first year participant, and has sent many contenders for debating in the Provincial Level. It has participated in the UBC debating tournament and Surrey Speech Contest.
