Pipestone Area High School is the only public high school in Pipestone, Minnesota, in the southwestern corner of the state. The high school is operated under the Pipestone Area School District. As of August, 2007, there were 336 students enrolled in grades 9-12 for the 2006-2007 school year. [http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/enrollments07.asp] Pipestone Area High School is housed in the same building as the Pipestone Area Middle School (grades 5-8) and the Pipestone Area School District, ISD #2689 administration. A new 197,000 square foot school was opened in January 2003 at the cost of $22.3 million. The new building replaced the old "Central" school, which was more than 80 years old. The current campus is located on Minnesota State Highway 30 on the west end of Pipestone.

Academics

Each student has the identical schedule each day for each semester, although the some student's schedules slightly vary from quarter to quarter.

Pipestone Area High School does not require the study of a foreign language, although it is highly recommended. Current languages offered are French and Spanish. PAHS also offers a variety of Advanced Placement classes, including AP Calculus, AP Chemistry and AP English Language and Composition. An accelerated math program is offered to selected students, starting in eighth grade. Other classes offered (some required), aside from the general core classes, are technology education, government, sociology, keyboarding, economics, family and consumer science (FACS), agriculture, art, band, choir. PSEO classes can be taken by qualifying students at Minnesota West Community & Technical College, which has a campus in Pipestone.

Extracurricular activities

All students are offered their choice of extracurricular activities, if they choose to participate. Academic extracurricular activities of notable mention include Math Team, Knowledge Bowl, Marching Band, Student Council, Peer Helping, One Act Play, Drama, Speech, FFA, among others.

Board of Education

The Board of Education is made up of seven members of within the school district elected by the voters to make major decisions, including financial decisions, personnel authorizations and educational policy.

Athletics

Until 2007, Pipestone Area had never won a state championship as a team; however, many individuals have been awarded state championships from Pipestone. Then, on March 18, 2007, the Pipestone Area girls' basketball team defeated the Albany Huskies 50-49 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Minnesota State High School League Class AA state championship [http://www.startribune.com/10156/story/1062163.html] to earn the school's first ever team title. This seemingly opened the floodgates for Pipestone Area, as the Arrow softball team won a state title in the Class AA state fastpitch softball tournament, with a 1-0, 17-inning, victory over Saint Anthony Village High School.The Arrows have been in four other state championship games:
Football - 1980 (loss to Crookston High School, 32-6, in Crookston, Minnesota)
Softball - 2003 (loss to Winona Cotter High School, 5-4, at Caswell Park in Mankato, Minnesota)
Baseball - 2005 (loss to Paynesville Area High School, 8-3, at Dick Putz Field in Saint Cloud, Minnesota)
Softball - 2008 (loss to Orono High School 4-3, at Caswell Park in Mankato, Minnesota
Pipestone Area is part of the [http://www.swcmn.org/ Southwest Conference] in the Minnesota State High School League. According to the League's classification system, the Arrows are in Region 3A.
