Sooryavansham is a 1999 Bollywood movie starring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role, Soundarya, Rachana Bannerjee, Anupam Kher and Kader Khan. Although the film was a box office flop critics hailed Amitabh Bachchan's performance as his best ever since his comeback in 1997. For generations the Sooryavansh family has ruled the village communities and it's people justly and fairly. This generation is headed by Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) who is feared and respected by the people of the village. He has 3 sons, the youngest, Heera (also Amitabh) he treats like a servant because he is the most illiterate of the family and he will not have anything to do with him. Heera is the obedient son and always respects his father despite the hatred his father as for him. Then his father is enraged when Heera proposes to marry his childhood sweetheart, Gauri (Rachana Bannerjee); and even more angered when Heera backs down promising never to marry again, at the request of Gauri who refuses to marry an illiterate. And then Radha (Soundarya) enters his life; she marries him; encourages him to live independently; and helps his set up his own business. Heera is then disowned by his father Thakur once and for all for breaking his promise of never marrying. Heera and Radha leave the village to live in their own home and Heera becomes a successful businessman. Soon they are blessed with the birth of a son. Heera successfully fulfills what was once his father's dream of a charitable hospital for the poor. Thakur comes to know of his grandchild, and meets him secretly without Heera or Radha knowing. Then one day he is rushed to hospital, apparently poisoned by food sent to him by Heera, and Heera becomes the prime suspect of wanting to killhis own father. The person who had actually poisoned him,was Thakur Bhanupratap Singh's arch nemesis, Khewara Thakur, and in the end,Khewara Thakur and Bhanupratap have a face-off in front of the hospital.
