- Brook Andrew
Brook Andrew is an
Australian visual artist ofWiradjuri and Scottish descent who works with neon, installation, photo-media, mixed-media, performance and video. Andrew challenges cultural and historical perception, using text and image to comment on local and global issues regarding race, consumerism and history.Andrew's most recent mixed-media works draw on Prussian naturalist Blandowski’s etchings of Australia from the 1850s (sourced from The Haddon Library, Cambridge, UK) that portray a wild and romantic Australia. Andrew is currently planning a solo exhibition at AAMU, Utrecht, working with international museum collections of Aboriginal shields with installation.
His work often dives into the political and social, not only challenging historical and personal conventions, but also allowing for other possibilities in regards to the ‘gaze’ and the consumer implicit activity in global issues. These themes inspire Andrew to travel locally and internationally, actively visiting museum collections and local communities to research and make new work. Blakatak: Like a Chocatak convened by Andrew, was a forum organised at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, creating rigorous debate surrounding Aboriginal art in a contemporary context.
Brook Andrew travels to New York in September for the Australia Council ISCP residency, and will next year create new work for the recently launched art space detached, Hobart.
Brook is represented by Tolarno Galleries in Australia.
