Like many of Israel's top young swimmers, Meiri competed collegiately in the
United States . In the fall of 1996, he arrived at theUniversity of Minnesota . He finished 8th in the 200 yard Individual Medley and 400 yard Individual Medley at the 1997 Big Ten Championships. That year, he finished 15th at theNCAA Championships in the 200 yard Butterfly to earnAll-America honorable mention.In 1998, Meiri earned All-Big Ten Academic Honors, and continued to swim well for Minnesota. He finished 6th in both the 200 yard Individual Medley and 200y Butterfly at the Big Ten championships, and then earned All-America honorable mention again by finishing 14th in the 200 yard Butterfly (1:46.60) at the NCAA Championships. In 1999, he finished 9th at the NCAA Championships in the 200y Butterfly with a time of 1:45.78.In 2000, Meiri finished 2nd in the 200 yard Butterfly (1:45.98) at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships, he finished 15th at the 2000 NCAA Championships in the 200m Butterfly (1:58.75) to earn All-America honorable mention. He was All-Big Ten all in 1998-2000. While competing for "The Gophers", Meiri also competed internationally for Israel. At the
2000 European Swimming Championships , he was a member of Israel's 4x100-meter Medley Relay Team (3:43.48) which placed 8th, and he finished 12th in the 200 m Butterfly (2:00.83). He broke the Israeli record in the 200 m butterfly at the European Championships. Olympics
Meiri was a member of Israel's swimming team at the
2000 Summer Olympics inSydney, Australia . There he competed in two events; he finished in 37th place in the 100m Butterfly (55.38), and was a member of the 4x100m Medley Relay Team, that finished 5th in its preliminary heat (3:43.39), and did not advance to the next round; they placed 17th overall.References
